Alentejo
Visiting Alentejo is like diving in a tranquil lake
Visiting Alentejo is like diving in a tranquil and serene lake of crystal-clear waters. Calmness, brilliant natural landscapes, very welcoming and chaste people is what you can expect from this region. It's the least populated area in Portugal and, perhaps due to this, it has so many wonders still to uncover, namely sublime secret reservoirs, lost villages that seem to be frozen in time and stunning historic cities, with Moorish and medieval castles.
Arraiolos, land of the circular castle and the acclaimed and exquisite carpets of Arraiolos. This picturesque town wins us over with its green painted plateaus decorated in the white of the typical houses of Alentejo.
Évora, a 'museum city' and an archaeological gem, with a deep historic and cultural heritage. A fortified city, the proud and majestic Águas de Prata aqueduct along with the walls that crisscross throughout the historic centre are impossible to miss as soon as you reach Évora. Moreover, said historic centre was rated World Heritage by UNESCO.
Known as 'Queen of the Border', Elvas is a hidden pearl in the boundaries of Alentejo. Its strategic positioning means those who visit it will be rewarded with an authentic and captivating city, full of history. The grandiose Amoreira aqueduct, held by robust pillars, the wall belt that surrounds the heart of Elvas, with a castle at its peak, together with the Graça and Santa Luzia forts as well as the three small forts are the major calling cards for this amazing city and UNESCO's Human World Heritage.
Come see the best this region has to offer, joining us in uncovering mysterious and beautiful Alentejo fields on this two-day roadmap.
